Baades Window and NGC 6528/6522
About
this Object
Like beacons in the mist, the globulars clusters NGC 6528
and NGC
6522 shine through the Sagittarius star cloud. The two are
seperated
by 16 arcmin and lie 25arcmin to the NW from Alnasl ( Gamma
Sagittarii), the bright star to the SE which lies near 100 light years
distant.
The image is Golden Yellowdo to the mainly older stars near the core of
the Milky Way. This area is called Baades Window because of
German American Astronomer Walter Baade. He was looking for
a uniform area of the Milky Way star cloud in order to estimate
the distance to the galactic center. He found it in this
area. He found the distance to be 30,000 light years. This
area is now known
as Baades Window. For more info on Baades Window follow this
