About
this Object Argurably one of the most photographed objects in the sky, IC 434, the Horse Head Nebula (also called Barnard 33) is column of dark nebulosity which resembles a horses head. Surrounding this region are many areas of bright emission and reflection nebula. Just west of the Horse Head is the Flame nebula lit by the bright star Alnitak, the eastern most star in Orions belt. Due south of the Horse Head is the blue reflection nebula NGC 2023. Still further south is the blue reflection nebula IC 435. To the west and north of the flame nebula are two small reflection nebulas IC 47 and 48.
