M83
About
this Object
M83 is often called the "Southern Pinwheel" due to is location
south of the galactic equator. It lies in
the constellation Hydra and is a face on spiral galaxy with many bright
nebula and
blue star forming regions along with a yellowish core highlighting the
older
population of stars. The distance to M83 is speculative, ranging
from
10 million to 25 million light years.
