About this object

NGC 6559 is a beautiful emission and reflection nebula in Sagittarius, lying not far from M8 this emission region is roughly 5000 light years distant. It's often imaged along with M8 and M20 in wide field photographs. In this view NGC 6559 is the bright curved nebula near center with a light blue inner area. Surrounding it are dark lanes of dust and other red ionized regions of hydrogen. This area is within the Milky Way and thousands of other stars can be seen along the periphery of the image. Several other cataloged objects also populate the image. To see where these objects are in the image check out this annotated version showing where these objects are: NGC6559Annotated
