NGC 2232

About this Object
NGC2232 is a bright open cluster in Monoceros published to contain roughly 22 stars. The brightest star near the center of the image is 10 Monocerotis. Distance to NGC 2232 is near 1350 light years. Apparent magnitude is 3.9 making this cluster a relatively easy object to see from even urban skies. Most of the brighter stars are young hot blue stars. A colorful pair of contrasting stars, on orange, one blue lies right next to 10 Monocerotis. Further to the upper right lies a small, very cool red carbon type star wihich stands out amongst the background. This image is a straight RGB image. A synthetic luminance image was made by summing the individual RGB frames.
