NGC 2440

About this Object
Located in the constellation Puppis around 1500 light years away a star shed its outer gas shell and caused a gaseous envelope which expanded into space.
Lighting up this gas is one of the hottest stars known, its temperature nearing 300,000 deg F.  The star, a white dwarf, is not resolved in the image but causes
the central region of this planetary nebula to be extremely bright..  Click here to see a much more resolved core area taken by the HST .http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap000730.html
