NGC 660

About this Object
NGC 660 is a rare polar ring galaxy in which a majority of the stars are orbiting nearly perpendicular to the galaxy core. Some literature suggests that NGC 660 went through an encounter with another galaxy in the distant past which caused its outer stars to be elongated into the current configuration. NGC 660 lies approx 20 million light years distant. The surrounding field is full of faint galaxies and galaxy clusters.
